Ethical Humanist Officiants are certified under the by-laws of the American Ethical Union to perform weddings. These ceremonies are typically tailored to the couple’s wishes for the day as well as the ideals of Ethical Humanism.
Who uses us
In addition to Ethical Humanist members, people who use our services may be of mixed religious backgrounds, have no religious affiliation, or wish to have a non-traditional ceremony. Each wedding demonstrates respect for and uniqueness of the individuals, and the importance of the promises that are made.
Typical components
Most ceremonies for our officiated weddings follow traditional formats with a welcome to the couple, a discussion of the marriage commitment, the exchange of vows and rings, and the pronouncement of marriage. Readings by friends and relatives, musical pieces, a request for support from the attendees are all elements that can be included. Traditions from other religious faiths or cultures (chuppah, broomstick, breaking glass) may be used as long as not done by the Ethical Humanist Officiant who will not use prayers or other theistic references.
Meeting structure
The Officiant meets with the couple two or three times to develop the ceremony using choices from materials already developed or personal information or vows provided by the couple. Couples are responsible for obtaining the marriage license. The Leader/Officiant is responsible for completing and filing the marriage license paperwork.
Just Matrimony
Ethical Humanism is dedicated to the legalization of gay marriage and will perform commitment ceremonies where it is not legally possible to have a wedding ceremony. We urge all couples to support the Just Matrimony (www.justmatrimony.org) campaign to further the movement to extend the right on marriage to all couples.
